Master Thesis with internship / student position option (m/w/d): Development of methods for estimating viscous losses of gears in oil-lubricated powertrain products

The aim of this thesis is to show and evaluate existing approaches and methods for the calculation of viscous losses ("splash losses" in the oil sump) of selected gear wheels. Due to their complexity, known analytical approaches are often difficult to apply or simply too imprecise. Therefore, the investigation shall be extended with measurements on an existing test rig in order to create a basis for further modelling. Furthermore, it is possible to plausibilise the losses by SPH-simulations (not scope of work). The work includes the following points among others:

• Literature research on analytical and empirical approaches to loss estimation ("splash losses")
• Design and evaluation of selected models from the literature
• Supervision of test runs on an existing test rig (at FH JOANNEUM)
• Evaluation of measurement results and comparison with prediction models
• Adjustment with SPH simulation (Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics) à optional / interface function
• Derivation of a tool for the systematic prediction of splash losses
• Building up know-how through sensitivity analyses / parameter studies
• Derivation of design guidelines for the sustainable integration of the topic in the company

Your qualification

• Technical studies with knowledge of physical principles of mechanical / hydraulic losses
• Independent, flexible and communicative work in a new environment
• Experience with Excel required, with Matlab is an advantage
• Effort: ~6 months, from approx. beginning of 2021
• Language: German or English

Salary:
As a Masterand you work under a free service contract and receive a monthly salary of € 600,- for a maximum duration of six months. The salary depends on the type of employment and will of course be adjusted in case of an additional internship or working student part-time employment.
